Our 9-5s have had various windshield wiper strangeness occur over the years. Typically, the wipers will fail to return to the "home" position after being switched on, will not work at all in the intermittent (upper) switch position, or some combination of the two. Inevitably the issue is a failure of the wiper transmission motor, which also contains the circuitry for the intermittent switching. Once or twice the mechanical linkage in the transmission had broken at one of the connections.
In the past, an indy who used to work on our Saabs would rebuild the wiper transmission by swapping in a good used motor. But most techs just replace the entire wiper transmission assembly with a new (or used) one.
