Just finished the water pump on my '99. The bearing had failed and the pulley was cutting into the timing cover. Lucky I caught it before doing any damage. The only symptom was a very faint high pitched squeal ... barely audible. The pulley was gently attacking the timing cover.

oh and thanks saab, the pulley has only a few milimeters clearance before contacting the timing cover, and it is uniquely designed as an efficient cutting tool.

This was a challenging job but only because I was out of town and away from my tools. I especially missed having my cable operated hose clamp pliers, I think I will start carrying that in my cars.

I got a carquest brand water pump, there were no markings on it whatsoever as to brand or country of origin. I was not impressed with the quality of this pump but it's all that I had available.

For the large O ring I used used viton, #219 from McMaster Carr(thanks Mark in Marine!) slathered with nylog blue label (thanks Brian!). For the small O ring I used the one that came with the pump. I would have used viton here as well, but I did not know the size.

It was a straightforward job. There is a lot of fiddling about to get access to the pump but by far the worst part was dealing with the hose clamps with only a few varieties of standard pliers.

Viton O-Ring
Nylog Sealant
Hose Clamp Pliers

For the record, any type of hose clamp pliers would have been fine for this particular job. The clamps are all directly accessible. But one that is cable operated if very helpful for all of the other hose related jobs on these cars.
