Well, I went for an aftermarket cat from Walker, which is a direct fit unit. It's looked like it matched up identically to the OEM at first glance. However' I really should have known I was in for trouble, when I told my wife things were going unexpectedly smooth, after removing the old cat, with zero issues.. and I was able to drop the sump with virtually no effort.. there was no shifting of the engine, or loosening of mounts or subframe needed.. I had it on ramps, and the pan came out with no manipulation needed.
However, when it was time to swap in the new cat, I could tell things weren't quite right. as the mounting bracket wasn't lining up... and the tail end of the unit connecting to the midflex pipe was coming up an inch or two short.. I was able to make up the inch, with put pulling the rest of the exhaust forward a bit.. but when connecting the front to the turbo studs.. the upper cat on the new unit was rubbing against the engine.. It seems like they welded it in place at the wrong angle.. I then noticed the flex pipe portion of the cat was also rubbing against a portion of the undercarriage.. So I decided to bag it.. and figured I'd put the old unit back in, and figure out whether or not to pursue another aftermarket unit.. Of course, when trying to get the new cat out.. it was stuck against the lower stud, and the stud was now damaged , beyond repair.. so I'm basically out of commission until I can get new turbo studs shipped, sometime midweek..
Then of course, the icing on the cake was trying to get a return from RockAuto, which honestly has been great to use, when eeuroparts didn't have a part i needed... However the customer service side of things, is a nightmare, as they have no online help/chat, or phone you can use.. You must work through their menu's to exhchange parts.. so now i have to purchase a second cat, and once it's shipped and ok.. and can then ship the first one back for a refund.. Of course I now have zero confidence the replacement will work, so I'll most likely end up shipping both back.. ugh !
I'm now one step closer to getting a new car... as the signs are becoming increasingly clear..
