bounce test not valid Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Mon, 15 Jun 2020 20:46:13 In Reply to: strut lifetime, don m [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 15 Jun 2020 15:06:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There is enough friction in the system that the car will always pass the bounce test. At 225k mi the struts are surely due to be replaced. WHen you pull them out you will see how easily they compress by hand.
It's hard to say how to diagnose worn struts ... bounce test is no good. I think when they are very far gone you will feel the car "wallow" a bit in the corners, esp when braking hard and cornering. You will surely feel a difference when you replace them.
Some of the strut mount bolts will probably break when you do the job, so have a new set handy. The '01 OEM bolts were a little thin, they were on mine and 2 or 3 (out of 6) broke.
when you do this job, also consider replacing these:
- sway bar link
- ball joints
- inner/outer tie rod ends
- bump stop
- strut bearing (OEM only here)
and at 225k mi Im afraid to say that it's likely you are due for:
- control arm bushings
- subframe bushings.
