Disclaimer: I'm not crazy.
The patient is a new to us '00 9-5 Aero with 140k mi. It presents with a moderate ticking/tapping/knocking noise, loud enough to be heard in the cabin. The rate of the tap increases with RPM. It does not diminish in volume at higher RPM. It does diminish when you let off of the throttle.
This is a father-son summer educational project. The car is my youngest son's and he is keen to put in the work and gain the knowledge and experience. We don't expect this car to be perfect and survive another 20 years and 400k mi. If we can improve it and extend it's lifetime by 50k we would be thrilled.
FWIW The PO updated the PCV and dropped and cleaned the pan (he reported the condition as "not bad really" :-) ) (And to me, WIW=0 :-) )
My uneducated ear would describe the sound as "tapping" and using a socket extension as a stethoscope on the valve cover I'd say that tapping is loudest on #3 or #4. My initial thought was to swap in a good head (I just happen to have one in stock). However I have not *confirmed* that the noise is from the valve train.
Given the spirit of this project, swapping in a a head and replacing the chain would not be wasted effort even if it yielded no improvement. Still I would like to be able to confirm the source of this noise. If its a bottom end knock, maybe it would make sense to drop the pan and start there.
going in with eyes wide open here, I understand that this could be a terminally sludged engine. It was likely neglected and or abused. We don't know and given the project goals it really does not matter. We are willing to put in the time and effort and, for us, the benefits of this project outweigh the fact that it might be futile. That said, I'm hopefull that we can materially improve the outcome of this car with some hard work and a few misc parts.
So, if labor was free and parts were cheap, what would you do to get another 50k mi out of noisey saab?
