In my experiences, the only time I have gotten the battery light while running as you describe is when the alternator is struggling to recharge the battery and therefore the battery is discharging. I have had two items cause that: (1) the alternator itself and (2) a badly corroded positive battery cable not allow the battery to recharge efficiently. Both are easy enough to test - most auto parts stores can test the alternator and battery, and a voltage drop test (under load) will help with checking out the cable. If your cable is original, I would be suspicious of it
At four years, the battery is also a suspect and likely on borrowed time, but I am not sure is as likely to light the charging system lamp as the other two items.
Good luck
