Low oil pressure, bearing wear, how worried should I be?

I took my 2008 9-5 in for an oil change (111k miles, regular oil changes always, full synth).
The mechanic (who is a saab guy) said there was bearing wear, metal in the oil, suspects a clogged intake.
He drops the pan, the intake is gunked up with silicon sealant from an overzealous repair done by a different shop a few years ago.
He cleans it out, adds RF-7 oil treatment, says the oil pressure is now at 35PSI and should be driveable, but spec says it should be 40PSI. He suspects that the bearings will continue to wear, says I should avoid driving long distances, and that the engine will likely need to be pulled within a year or two.
Does this match your experience? Is he being over-cautious? I have the sense that people often drive with moderate low pressure for long periods.
Thanks,
Nick
