There are many options for decent halogens and some sites that review the different brands for light output and color. I find that you pay more for somewhat more light but pay a big penalty in longevity. Even some of the name brand halogens that advertise more light may only last six months and will tell you the bulbs have a shorter life right on the package. I think a lot of folks think whiter light equals more light and therefore LEDs are an improvement. Many of the LED replacements I have seen for H7 bulbs are from no name Chinese companies that may or may not make good products. And the shape of them with the large heat sink and fan don’t look like they would fit in the housing with the rear cap on. You definitely don’t want to leave the rear caps off because your headlight fixtures will quickly fill with dirt. I won’t even get into some of the crazy light patterns some of the OEM LED headlights are putting out. I think the regulators in Washington, if there is anyone left at DOT evaluating headlights, have thrown up their hands and are approving anything. As someone already said, the LED replacements for halogens are probably not at all suitable for the lenses in the car and the reflectors. States that have rigorous safety inspection may also not pass headlight conversions.
