Hello,
It is very difficult and can damage the paint. Yes the heat gun method seems to work best. I would search some of the Porsche 993 forums for some tips on removal of the film and the glue left behind. The 993's (911 from 1995 to 1998) came with this film on the leading edges of the rear wheel wells were they were prone to rock chips. There pieces were probably about 20 inches by 12 inches. I have replaced a few and it is a tedious job that's not quick. Good Luck, Bernie
