Trans Fluid Can Overshoot Your Drain Pan 1 Saabers Like This Post! I've flushed the 2000 9-5 transmission before. I remember it being a 24mm drain plug that is hard or impossible to get a socket on due to its location, but an open end wrench worked well. When removed, the fluid drains more forcefully than you might expect since less viscous than motor oil. A longer drain pan placed more toward the direction of the plug faces will catch it. You need to remove the dipstick to allow air into the trans to allow it to drain well. You have to refill through the dipstick anyway.
One change of fluid will replace about 50% of the old fluid, and second cycle will result in about 75% change and a third will take it to 87% changed.
