I have this issue for last 2 plus years (usually only during summer months, but this year its happening (and a little worse) as the temps are turning colder which is making me scratch my head even more)
But without a long history of my personal intervention in my case, it is worth saying, yes, it could be the fuel pump return check valve causing this, which is not uncommon.
A good way to check (if you dont have a fuel pressure gauge to attach at the fuel rail schrader valve) is to turn key to on (but not start) listen for pump, and repeat 3-5 times. give it a few seconds each time... If car starts fine after this sequence it is very likely the check valve. The idea is that the pre pump primings will create the proper 40psi at the rail, while just one prime may not get enough pressure built up.
With that said, I have this issue but it is not the check valve (I have 40psi right away every time testing with a fuel pressure guage) which means trouble lies elsewhere.
good luck.
