Step 1 of this process was giving everything a deep clean (especially necessary after the valve cover gasket replacement) which revealed 2 problems.
First was the o-ring/oil filler tube/oil cap combo. It revealed a very small stream of oil and I'm going to assume was allowing smelly air out. I replaced the filler tube and oil cap together, so I can't say whether the culprit was one or the other.
This took care of 90% of the problem. The final solution was the 90 degree hose coming off the top of the PVC trap, and the hose that connects to it. Very deteriorated and cracked! FredKolb, your photos in your gallery were super helpful in understanding what was needed to fix!
Thanks for the suggestions, as always I was wrong (SAI gaskets checked out fine!)
