Dang! Maybe I live in Manitoba... -20 this morning and I went out to take out the garbage in jeans flip flops and a long sleeve shirt. Would have been a bit cool for short sleeves... (Yeah I've been that guy at the home depot also)... In all seriousness, Manitoba is the real deal when it comes to winter. Thanks for posting that!
We use Rust Check. It is a bit messy, but it works and does have a lifetime guarantee if applied annually from brand new. It makes a huge difference. Like any product, actual results depend on the fastidiousness of the applicator. Ours is sprayed into every body cavity through drilled holes that are plugged and those areas show zero rust. Ultimately any of these things are coatings and exposed coatings get worn/damaged from use. So stuff underbody like subframes, control arms etc do get some cosmetic rust but wherever it gets sprayed does really well. IIRC, ziebart is a wax based product? I don't see a lot about it around here so I don't know how well it holds up. Krown, Rust Check, and a few other oil based products seem most popular. I can say for sure that the electronic rust protection schemes do not work well (from what I've seen), probably because cars are not continuously immersed in electrolyte like boats.
Dog legs are a different issue. The rust starts in the part that is not a sealed hollow cavity, but rather a concave region of sheet metal that has several plastic pieces join around it (ie leaky seams). Sand, dirt, salt, and water all get in there all the time and the only way to completely clean it is to remove the wheel and all the plastic, clean, and rust spray. Those get full of gunk very quickly and imho could have been better designed from that perspective. It's going to be a problem up here unless the car is a hibernating garage queen (I've got a c900 doing that but my 9-5s have to be workhorses).
