This AM my 2002 AERO decided to give my dash a light show; ABS, brake, ESP off, big red triangle. I put it in park (automatic), turn car off. Turned it back on, lights came back on and tranny locked out. I went about my business all day, which included pulling the ABS sensor out of my 2001 in case that was the issue.

Finally a CEL code came on, p1577, which is something to do with buses and the way they communicate (I’m not an electrical engineer). I waited until dark, realized my brake lights didn’t work all day. I only drove about 50 miles… so I removed the brake light switch, cleaned it, gooped it up, went to re-install. I hooked up the harness to the switch, and wanted to see what happened. The brake lights work fine now, but the brake light switch is attached to the harness but not installed into its bracket frame. No dash lights at all anymore, so I shouldn’t complain too much.

Anyone have any clue as to why the lights work fine without the brake light switch installed? Did I clean the cruise control switch? There are 2 switches, left and right. I went with the one on the right side. Is there another way that the lights know that you have the brake pedal depressed?

Also for anyone attempting this, the switch comes out by turning or twisting it, not pulling on it. It has some little wings that line up with its mounting frame.
