You can substitute a black DIC for a red one and the car will run more or less the same, though with reduced knock detection. (It's been a matter of some controversy - the Company of course said "don't do it" but many Saab technicians say from their experience it's OK.) When I bought my '97 9000 it had a black DIC on it and it ran just fine. I did replace it with a red one and kept the black as an emergency spare. Really could not tell the difference on the road.
However, everything I've seen over the years when this comes up says the old-style red DIC will not work as a substitute for the black one in newer Saabs. Frankly I'd be afraid to try for fear of damaging the vehicle's electronics.
