How do I confirm the correct manual transmission fluid level? Posted by mb [Email] (#2713) [Profile/Gallery] (more from mb) on Fri, 26 Aug 2022 18:02:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2005 9-5 Aero wagon manual transmission - I do not see transmission fluid dripping from the level drain after likely adding a little more than it should need (1.5 liters for refilling, according to the car's manual). How do I confirm the correct level of manual transmission fluid in this car?
I drained the transmission fluid when the car was still a little warm, after about 2 hrs after driving. After removing the fill plug, I loosened the level and drain plugs. Then I removed the level plug completely to see if I could see or feel fluid - nothing, though I could not get my finger fully in. Then I drained about 1.4 liters. After adding about 1.6 liters, still nothing from the level drain. I ran the engine (idling) until it reached normal operating temperature - still nothing from the level drain. I realize that I probably have to drive it to get the transmission hot (to expand the fluid), which I plan to do tomorrow. If I see fluid, I'll let it drain until it's a slow steady stream. If I don't, I'll add more fluid until I see a drip.
Is this the right approach?
The car is level, on a lift.
