Maybe not a total rip-off.. as you did say that you ended up replacing the links and ball joints, which typically can run anywhere between 400 and $700 in repairs. And given the age of the car, it's probably a "good practice" to replace the control arm bushings while you're doing the ball joints. So things add up quickly, when paying a shop to do the work..
Fortunately, you have the knowledge and skills to do much of this work yourself.. most of us here are DIY'ers.. but we know how scary it is once a shop gets your car up on a lift to assess reparis, especially those involving suspension components.
