I'd think the line was rust weakened just past the area you might try to replace or modify.
My line failed in that area because I replaced the alternator (2x) and pulleys and had this way of shifting the motor around,and I stressed the line and it cracked right there, on the '04 Arc.
Meanwhile, on this '06 wagon I picked up in November, the previous owner replaced that PS line and got it done for less than that. Maybe combine the job with replacing the rear and central subframe bushings? That's what I'm considering doing on that '04 I mentioned (I replaced the long belt and central pulley and thus disturbed my PS line repair) - maybe this is the reason so many people do a short belt install? :^)
