Yesterday I tackled the rear hatch struts in the wife's wagon. The trim turned out to be the easiest part of the job. Photos below show how the trim clips work. They must have been a SAAB design, not GM because they make sense. The spring clips in the posts on the trim hold tight but compress easily, and don't break like I've seen in other brands of car.
Getting the retainer clips off the ends of the struts was easy once I found them. The pdf printed instructions that most people download for this job don't mention the clips, just "pop off the ball joint" but that doesn't work in a big way. Putting the retainer clips into the strut ends was very difficult, especially the rear of the right-side strut.
I also replaced the antenna. Didn't know until this morning that this car had only a dummy antenna, so I paid extra for a wire that doesn't connect to anything in the car.
At least neither of these jobs will require doing for the remainder of the car's life.
