I'm on my 4th thermostat in 8 years. The stat has been replaced following the same pattern: new stat, all good for a year. In year 2, the car struggles to reach temp when the outside temperature is below approximately 40F, which then causes the temp gauge on the dash to drop out and then eventually the car throws a code after enough cold days in a row.
After posting this question 2 years ago, somebody mentioned perhaps the fans were running constantly. Now that the stat has seemingly failed again, I'm revisiting this with fresh perspective.
From my observation (I do not have a Tech 2) with an OBD2 reader, it appears that when the car's ACC is in econ mode, temp steadily increases to operating temperature (approx 185F). The radiator fan does not turn on until the coolant temp sensor hits the WIS specified temp of 96C.
However, when the ACC is not in econ mode (aka engaging the compressor) the fan is running almost constantly and so the car never gets warmer than about 174.
This is all with an ambient temp of 40F.
After going through WIS, it states that the fan will run on low if the car is moving at a slow speed (below 38km/h) and AC pressure is between 9 and 18 bar.
I have a seemingly normal Air Con system, but I'm beginning to think that at 40 degrees ambient temp that pressure reading seems too high (using the Nissens pressure chart for ambient temp and variable speed compressor).
The last stat was installed by my fantastic indy (Moose Proof Auto) so I'm not concerned about stat installation issues.
Do I have a faulty AC pressure switch (part #32016177)?
Any other thoughts? Thank you all!
