The plastic tanks undergo a chemical destruction over the years, especially on the hot side, where it comes to a point that the plastic tank rupture or in a good scenario crack and start to leak slowly.
On my own Volvo 960, I came back from a parts run one hot summer, parked the car at the shop and went inside. A few minutes later, I heard a pop and coolant was gushing from the car.
Just the sudden superheating from the test drive and then shut off the engine with no cooling fan or water pump circulation was enough to blow the tank wide open.
And this was a radiator that had been replaced already.
