2008 9-5, Tire Trauma Post #1 Posted by goodwrenchldj [Email] |
My wife and I live in Tampa, FL. On Sunday, May 25th we left Burlington, NC at around noon in our 2008 9-5 sedan en-route to Charlotte, NC. It was a beautiful sunny and warm late spring day. Since we had plenty of time we decided to take local roads instead of the interstate. That turned out to be a very good decision.
About one hour into the trip the TPMS gave us a LF alert. We pulled over and the pressure was 28 on my gauge. I pumped it up to 35 and we proceeded. Twenty minutes later we got another LF alert and pulled over. The tire was removed and an inner sidewall failure was discovered.
The spare was installed and we resumed our journey with my wife driving. About twenty miles later she experienced a vibration in the steering wheel. We pulled over again. The tread was separating from the spare. This time we resumed our journey on a AAA flat bed tow truck. I bought a set of Michelin Pilot Sport tires in Charlotte. The odometer read 93,593 at that time.
The picture is of the six year old Goodyear Eagle Sport that was on the LF wheel of our car. It had been regularly rotated and was driven 48,523 miles before it failed with 5/32” of tread remaining. Most of those miles were on interstates or local Florida roads which do not have potholes.
I was unable to add a second picture to this post. Therefore, you will see a second posting showing a rather interesting picture of my failed 17 year old spare.
Have any of you experienced anything like this? Does anybody have an idea of where I can get a NEW spare.
