I recall the original pads and rotors on my early 2000s 9-5 were shot at under 30,000 miles, and the black dust was incredible. I don’t think I have actually worn out a set of Akebono pads since then, but replace them when the rotors need to be replaced, not because of wear but because of rust (even coated rotors). Now there are friend who don't think the Akebono pads stop the car properly (and who think I’m nuts for using them), and they are entitled to their preferences. But the Akebono/Zimmerman combination seems good for an average driver and dust is negligible. With the salt around here, getting rotors off after 24 years could be challenging as the little screw and hub seem to get rust welded.
