pop, puff of smoke and then Freon

This is kind of weird. There was 104 heat index last Wed. and after driving and AC working just fine I got a flat. It was passenger side front tire (don't know if this is related) and a shop jacked car up and fixed the tire. After completion I started car up with the AC engaged and there was the sound of a loud pop, then a puff of smoke from right front wheel and then the smell of Freon. Shop's workers stood around car all scratching their heads.
I assume a hose somewhere just popped off one of the components and leaked the Freon. But why a puff of smoke? Why the loud pop? Why did I give up my 9000? lol
Any ideas?
