The rear lines can corrode over time near the fuel tank, especially if you have winter. Sitting with old brake fluid probably doesn't help. Based on your original question and if you are not sure about how to diagnose and fix, I would take it to a mechanic as it is a major safety item. It shouldn't be too hard to get a used master cylinder from a junk yard car if need be but I would suspect the lines first.
