When you buy a new or rebuilt rack, almost all of them come with the instruction that "the warranty is void unless the power steering system is flushed". This stems from these racks being very sensitive to particles (junk) in the system. Many people go as far as to add after market filters for this reason. I agree with the previous poster that you may have junk in your fluid.

Whenever I change a steering rack, I also replace the hoses and the pump. I don't want to have to fool with it again for another 100,000 miles (YMMV).
