I think it's questionable whether or not the V70 is safer than a 9-5 wagon. Both have roughly equivalent safety features, with subtle difference in implentation (SAAB has the head/torso side airbags, Volvo has its SIPS curtain airbags and side airbags-for example).
Since neither wagon has been formally tested by IIHS or evaluated by the NCAP, we'll never know. It seems that you are anecdotally basing the wagons' safety ratings based on their respective sedan counterparts. For frontal crash tests, your analogy may apply-but for side or rear crash tests, this should differ somewhat (due to difference in bodystyle). Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the V70 is safer than the 9-5 wagon. I can tell ya which is more fun to drive! :-)
