I beg to differ. I find the average fuel mileage to be fairly accurate. Comparing the SID average to the actual average gas mileage (miles driven/gallons of fuel at refill), it is usually within 0.5MPG if not spot on. This has been so in my '94 900SET with over 132,000 miles and also holds true for our 9-5. As you know, DTE can vary-depending on current driving conditions (stop and go commuting traffic versus highway driving), but the average gas mileage is more a reflection of the overall driving conditions (ratio of city/highway driving) and average speed on a full tank of gas rather than current driving conditions (unless you reset the average gas mileage at speed for instantaneous gas mileage).

In general, the lower your average speed over a full tank of gas, the lower your gas mileage-all things considered. The converse is not always true, however. Otherwise, I'd drive at over 100MPH all the time! ;-)

When my wife's '01 LPT wagon averages 17 to 22 MPH on a full tank of gas, her gas mileage is typically 15.8MPG to 17.6MPG or so. On our last 150 mile trip, our average speed was 71MPH, with our average gas mileage being 26.5MPG. The DTE on the SID read 475 miles at the end of our trip, reflecting the fact that about 95% of that trip consisted of highway mileage without wild variations in average speed. Had the driving mix been different, the DTE would have reflected it moreso than the average gas mileage.

One time I drove to Atlanta from New Orleans in my '94 900SET (for the '95 SOC, but I digress). Even though the outside temp on the SID read 104 degrees, I averaged about 28MPG at an average speed of 80MPH (do the math)with the A/C maxed at the LO setting. Did it on one tank of gas. Dontcha love that? :-)
