I look at it this way. Would I rather wait to get my car serviced when the dealer has less going on, or would I rather schedule immediately (without a wait) and drive a rental? Personally, my schedule is so tight that I would take the rental all day long just to get my vehicle serviced immediately. It's nice knowing that the dealer would fit me in when things are running tight for them. My cup is half full, how's yours?
Even here, our service dept. runs out of loaners. Do we stop scheduling appointments? Of course not. If need be, we rent a car for the customer. It's just as convenient. Enterprise picks the customer up, and takes them to their car (of course, we have an Enterprise five doors down the road). Enterprise tries to rent the larger cars first, but every now and then you'll get a Neon.
Think of it this way. Getting a cheapy econo box isn't so bad? Afterall, has there ever been a car stunt that you've seen in a movie that you've always wanted to try? Hmmmmmmm..... Tempting isn't it? All of a sudden your Neon becomes a "Hertz Rent-A-Racer (i.e. The "Days of Thunder" Rental Car Scene).
Cheers,
Brian.
