I have used K&N Filters on a variety of cars and motorcycles fro about twenty years. The real benefit (in my humble opinion) for K&N is in their usage for open throat filtration - as used on the end of the intake plenum for either a carburated or fuel-injected system. If the car has a large still air box - as in many modern cars - including our Aero's, the advantage of the K&N will likely be minimal - unless you choose to gut the entire still air box. The advantage of the box is a stabilized temperature and protection from splash. To remove that box is a real risk.
Relative to filtration capacity, however, the oiled gauze system of the K&N is extraordinary. In the super-finnicky world of high HP 2-cycle motorcycle engines (to which I am now retired), the K&N kept the innards incredibly clean. I was amazed at rebuild time - I would find practically no scratching or gauling. This claim could not be made for paper filtration - which overload and eventually let grit by (but no water - and that's the fall-back advantage of paper). One more thing (sorry to be so long winded - pity my poor students at the university), if you go to K&N filtration, do NOT over-oil the gauze - use the filter spray and give it a light coating - or you will actually LOOSE hp by restricting the air flow.
Varoom!
Eric
