The myth of increased center wear with high inflation pressures is a hold over from the days of bias ply tires, albeit it still applies with some of the cheap off brand radial tires still available. With real steel belted radials, real meaning those with steel cords wrapped around the circumference, this is simply not a problem. I run 40 psi and higher in my tires and the wear is even. Steel has a very high modulus of elasticity and even 40 psi will not stretch the steel belts in good radial tires enough to show a major increase in center wear.
Now as to high pressure affecting handling and braking; racers who have to use street tires shave off about half the tread and inflate them to the max. They may subsequently lower the front or rear pressure to dial in the handling, but the other end will be as high as they can go. There should be a clue here.
Brooks.
