Technically, Green Diamond tires are considered Remolded tires. There is a HUGE difference between a conventional retread and a remolded tire. Old style retreading was simply gluing a new tread band to an old casing.

Green Diamond tires do reuse a casing from an old tire, but the inspection and manufacturing process is very extensive and high-tech.

Step 1 - Only premium casing are used (Michelin, Goodyear)
Step 2 - Every casing undergoes a multi-step inspection process. The casings are first visually inspected for blemishes, holes and signs of age. If the casing passed the visual inspection, they are sent to a mechanical inspection where a series of sensors look for minute holes, belt separations, etc.
Step 3 - The entire outside of the casing is buffed (tread and sidewall)
Step 4 - The tread layer is applied as a continuous band of rubber (strip winding)
Step 5 - The sidewall veneer is applied.
Step 6 - The tire is placed in the mold/press unit to cure (same process as any new tire).
Step 7 - Final inspection

In many European countries, remolded tires account to 15-20% of replacement tire sales. Failure rates for remolded tires are less than 1%, whereas rate of 3% are common with new tires.

The reason Green Diamond remolds vs. just making a new tire is that the carbide infusion is a very slow and expensive process. Using a new casing would drive the price up $25-40 per tire.

There are a few Volvo forum (http://www.brickboard.com) people who have used the tires and have posted comments.

Green Diamond tires were invented in Iceland in the early 1970's and are currently produced in a plant in Laholm Sweden.
