I don't have a legal advice, but I can tell you about my experience.
When I was busted in NJ for speeding, no registration and no insurance. I got hit with some thing like 15 points total and big fine. This was due to the fact I had multiple violations, which carries separate points & fines. The cop told me at the time of the offense that he can probably make a deal in court. (Just as you were)
Now, when I showed up at court, I pleaded guilty, but asked the judge if he can be linient and reduce fine/points. At this point, the judge asked the officer who busted me, "How was the defendant during the incident ?". To which the officer answered, "He was a perfect gentleman.". After that, he muttered few things to reduce my fines some what. I think it saved me few hundred dollars, even if I still lost my license.
My recommendation to you is to just be sincere in court and straight out just ask for a reduced points. If the cop told you that he is going to give you a deal, I'm betting that he will. Also, the cop is going to be at the court, so you may have a chance to talk to him before the hearing. So, just get there on time and look for the cop. If you do see him, ask him what you should do exactly.
Kitty.
