We've tried both our Fisher-price and our Britax in all three rear positions. Both seats work equally well in all positions, but we've pretty much decided on the Fisher-Price behind the driver's seat. We are using the Fisher-Price because the Britax fits better in our other car(Eurovan).
The center position is the safest, of course, and has the advantage of having the baby where both people can see and tend to him/her. The advantage to mounting to either side is that of loading/unloading, of course; the drawback is that only one person can see and interact with the baby. If the baby is behind the driver, for instance, it is difficult for the driver to see the baby and impossible to for the driver to hand him/her things or pick up water bottles, etc...
A plus is that whichever side you mount the seat the visor vanity mirror on the opposite side ends up being ideally pointed to see the baby. So - you can see your child easily from the passenger seat if he/she is seated on the driver side.
Hope that helps...
Sam
