As keeton suggested, take it easy until you see how the thing works!
When you get a solid alarm, don't just stand on the brakes! Look in the mirror first, then slow quickly but not dangerously to near the speed limit. You do NOT want to have to explain why you caused a chain reaction accident to the unsmiling officer. If everyone else is hauling ass, slow down to the speed of the slower guys and move over a lane if necessary and let the other scoff-laws go past. If you are lucky one of them will get pulled over rather than you.
Nuisance alarms are relatively easy to handle. If you pass a shopping mall every day, and get an alarm every day, then you are picking up the door openers. The Valentine 1 uses arrows to display the direction of the threat - that helps a lot. If you don't know for sure that the alarm is bogus, then assume it is real and slow down at least a little.
Don't try to hide _anything_ from a police officer! Poking around inside your car while he sits behind you will only arouse his suspicions. There is nothing illegal about owning and using a detector in most states. If you are caught in VA, I guess they can issue a citation.
Remove and store the Valentine 1 in a secure place or take it with you when you leave the car, unless you are prepared to spend anoth $400 real soon.
I _never_ use my detector to speed. I am a law-abiding citizen....
