There's no such thing as an automatic being "better" than a manual. None. It's a matter of preference, just like car color.
I have an '02 Aero sedan with a manual and when the car was in the shop (for two hours, granted), they gave me an automatic Arc to drive. I couldn't wait to get my car back. It was like a different beast altogether. I wrote earlier that the Saab manual isn't as nice as an Audi/VW manual and definitely poorer than a Porsche or BMW manual, but it's still very good. And the clutch is great. Front wheel drive and automatics, in my opinion, do not go well together.
If you're leaning toward a manual transmission, get the manual and do not look back. If you have doubts, get the automatic. It's that simple. I like automatics in trucks, but I have difficulty driving cars which are not manuals. I don't trust automatics, I think - the idea of the car deciding when to shift is a little disconcerting when I want to go NOW.
And I had the shift light turned off, no sweat, at the 30-day service. They also "tweaked" the gearshift so it would be a little stiffer (I like it that way).
