wagon. The ti (5 speed) was several hundred pounds lighter than a e36 sedan like you're looking at, but engines were the same. I would say that the performance in straight line is roughly similar, with the 318 having a bit more top end power and the saab having much more torque and a much better midrange. In normal highway driving, the saab feels much faster due to the torque, while on back roads the ti, whilst revved up, felt better.
I won't compare handling, as the ti was a much much smaller car than the wagon, and hence much more nimble.
