GM owns the trademark for "Aero" in the USA as applied to motor vehicles - so the original 900 "Aero" couldn't be so labelled in the US. Not until 1990, when the joint venture was implemented. "Aero" in Europe has always denoted the highest power, highest trim level Saab, that in a land where the 9-3 SE (and now, the 9-3 Vector) could be bought with low power engines. Here in the USA the "Aero" name has been applied only to the "big Saab",and the top line "small Saab" has always had the most potent of the 2.0 engines and suspensions. SCUSA has hinted strongly that an "Aero" version of the 9-3 is coming, and it will include a more powerful engine than the current 2.0T, which is standard in the USA in both Arc and Vector forms. Again, in Europe, the 2.0t is available in Arc, and perhaps even Vector form. The current European 9-3 "Aero" is a Vector form with the hottest engine and suspension available, while in the USA the Vector is sold only with the hottest engine and suspension. And the USA "Arc" will be sold with the hottest engine standard and the sports suspension optional.

The Viggen was a special, limited production model, built off-line by Valmet, with unique interior, suspension, and engine. The Europeans would not have it, considering it too much engine for the 9-3 chassis, and after the second year it became a USA only model.
