My theory on why it's not available now is that they didn't have the map data in the appropraite format for NOrth America. The nav system is available in Europe. To see it, just go to http://www.saab.com, and select the global site, and build a saab online -- you'll get to choose the nav system, with some pics of it.
I'm just hoping it's a retrofit option for the rest of us.
I also don't think the nav system is necessarily a direct competitor to onstar. I look at onstar as an emergency system (get in an accident, and the police are called automatically), and as a convenient, albeit expensive, cordless phone. For route assistance, it leaves a little bit to be desired, and I couldn't imagine staying connected to the service for a 1 hour trip or whatever. But we have had instances where the mapquest.com map we printed out didn't work right (and is comparable to nav systems I would imagine), and the onstar people directed us to the right place.
