The fact that the car started with jumper cables was the clue.
Although you check the fluid level in the battery, you need to check the specific gravity of the fluid to see if there are any dead cells. The tool to do this (looked like a large eyedropper with little pellets in it) used to be quite common in the days before maintenance free (yeah, right) batteries, but I haven't seen one in years.
Another test is to keep the voltmeter on the battery while actually starting the car. A battery may appear to have 12V with no current draw but if it dropps to 9 volts or below when cranking, then the battry is duff.
