I have pondered some of the reasons that caused me to buy another Saab and have revisited my choice of the "wagon" once again. I have found after living with this car about 6 months that the choice was a good one. I thought some may find my experiences(opinions!) helpful if considering another Saab.
The 01 wagon(185)was purchased to replace my 99 9-5SE sedan(170). This was done because the 170 was a "ho-hum" car and I was not truly happy with it having owned a 97 200 hp 9000 CSE. When I considered altentive cars none quite measured up to the Saabs in overall desirability. I also missed the "combi" trunk of the old 900s and 9000s. This pushed me to the Wagon as the car style of choice. The dealer advised me the 01 saabs would be more powerful and rescheduled torque onset and for my use it would be just what I was looking for.
I can now say, after 6 months, the dealer was correct in his recommendation. The 01 (185) is an "oh, yes" car. lots more pep and get- up and go. The wagon is a much more "usable" vehicle as was the "combi". One added feature I never really considered was the "out of car visibility" the wagon is much less restricted vison from the driver's seat than the sedan and this alone has made me very glad I selected the wagon.
The 9-5 isn't a 9000 in performance or comfort but the added reliability improvements and systems capability probably makes it a better automobile, overall. I find wind noise on the 9-5. is much less but road noise is greater and the suspension softer than the old 9000s. I don't notice any improvement in the basic car from the 99 to the 01 except in the engine power, that alone has made my investment worth while and the increased visibility of the wagon a real plus for safety. Just thought I would give one person's impression and take it for what it is worth. BTW all cars are/were automatics.
