One of the advantages of steel, other than being cheap, is that they are not as prone to bending as alloys when you hit a winter pothole. So you not only save money on the purchase but also have a more durable wheel for winter driving and save yourself possible subsequent expense and aggravation.
That said, I bought the Tire Rack package of 15" steel wheels and the Dunlop Graspic snows about a month ago. Traction in the snow is very good, high speed handling and cornering is not as good as the stock setup but that is to be expected with a higher-sidewall tire. Noise is usually an issue with snows, but I have about 1500 miles on them already and they are definitely more quiet than my stock Michelins. I recommend the Tire Rack package.
Additional notations:
- I checked around and their price seemed to be unbeatable
- arrived quickly, 3 business days
- the wheel balancing was a quality job
