Steve: I am in the same situation as you. Trying to decide on a 2000 AERO or SE LPT. With a suspension kit and sway bars you can get a base or SE 9-5 to handle even better than an AERO but there is trade off in the form of a much harsher ride. I have test driven both cars and the AERO is a great blend of performance and comfort the SE is far too soft for my taste. ECU upgrades from SAAB bring the LPT to 200hp and other aftermarket upgrades can bring it to 240hp. Then you have to consider brakes and a tire a wheel package and perhaps an exhaust. All this will bring the price of an SE very close or past the cost of the AERO.
With all that said this is what I have come up with.
1) If you like to tinker with your car and can do most of the work yourself get an SE or Base 9-5 and have fun.
2) If you want out of the box performance get an AERO.
3) However, if you are power hungry like me you could get an AERO and get an ECU upgrade to bring it up to 274hp. I believe that is the way I will be going. As the car ages and needs replacment parts ie. suspension, exhaust...... I will look for more performace in those areas then.
