Hi NSK
I think the adventure spirit is great. I do a pant-load of commuting and have always enjoyed experiments with car ownership.
The new Volvo S60 seems awesome - but look for opportunites. I was cross-shopping a BMW 5-series, Audi A6-2.7t and a S-series Jag when three unexpected cars popped onto the horizon: A 2001 Mercedes 430 sport that had been ordered for a customer and then he bought a S-class off the lot (discounted 18K), a 2001 540i six-speed (discounted 14k), and the 2002 Aero (four of them actually - all with 5-speeds) sitting on a lot with 7k discounts. Couldn't resist the Aero - the others will have to wait until the time is right.
I'm drooling ove the new 350Z, and the WRX is such a blast to drive it makes your head spin (the 260hp version/six-speed will require diapers to protect from seat soilage!).... I start thinking... I could lease those two (WRX for bad weather) for the price of buying the BMW and split the mileage. My wife thinks I am crazy (she should know that I am crazy by now!) although she is not much better with her car scheming (and she can heel-and-toe a standard transmission). Don't forget that the Cadillac CTS Vi- series will be here this spring with a 350hp V8 and a six speed - they will sit unsold (I'm sure) and be available within 6 months for 32-34K.
Finally, I would just caution against setting strict performance standards for your cars. Drive them and seek the overall experience and balance. Most of the cars you are looking at are so blindingly fast as to be dangerous to drive at anything approaching 8-9/10's of their capacity - I have to play strict "rule-games" with my Aero to avoid triple digit friskiness (such as making the lane mentally much narrower, requiring perfect heel-and-toe downshifts, etc). I have put on different wheels/tires/exhaust mostly for the guttural/aural experience - not because I need anymore capacity (my own capacity should be so vaulted)...
Oh well, I am do for my sedatives now...
eric
