Dave,
May I start by saying that I understand your apprehension toward the "erosion" of the Saab brand by other suppliers, but, as you know it is not uncommon globally these days. Wasn't the 9000 chassis shared by multiple, unrelated manufacurers? The OG 9-3 chassis? The NG 9-3 chassis? Didn't the Germans [ZF] make a significantly less reliable autobox for the 9000? Now, it's made in Japan. Outside of the Saab marque: Doesn't GM powertrain supply nearly all automatic transmissions to BMW? For the Volvo S-80 [a variant of the 4T-65E, I believe]? Isn't the engine for the small Jag a Ford? Some of these changes [certainly not all] were for the better, or at least a few.
I do wish for the Saab brand to remain distinctive, and for me that includes the front profile, interior gauge layout and font, ignition switch, dome light, and numerous other "intangibles" like that. I know the engine is the "heart" of the car. I *wanted* to like the I-4 better. I preferred the V-6, which stated on the sticker IN BOLD LETTERS:
Parts Content:
Engine Parts - United Kingdom
Transmission Parts - Japan
Those who didn't notice that those parts weren't made by Saab can't read.
