Lots of people (myself included) have 9-5s with nothing to do but normal maintenance and washing.
The Tech II has reported the problem ... the MIU has dropped off the data bus. Only two things can cause this - bad connection (or connector) or bad MIU. The fact that the lights all went on and the gauges went dead are a tip-off that maybe the diagnostic code is leading you in the right direction ;-).
Is it still intermittent or has it gone "solid"?
Personally, I think your earlier "check engine" light was unrelated, and possibly a fluke. Esepcially on such a new car - a couple or three misfires at idle due to something working its way through the system and there goes the CE light. The OBDII diagnostics are (by law) very stringent.
