Paul: Regarding metallic vs solid colors, the only advantage that I know of that might affect your choice would be the fact that solid colors can be repaired in small areas by a process of touching up combined with wet sanding, and can effectively do a perfect repair job on things like stone chips that do not dent the metal, but only chip the paint. I have had this done several times on various cars and my understanding is that at this time, it is a process that will only work on solids.Even when the top l;ayer of clear is sprayed over the repaired area, it too can be wet sanded and then polished to match the existing finish by a competent shop.
Personally I love the look of metallic finishes, but will probably get my next car in Laser Red to have that hidden insurance policy if it is needed. Having to repaint a fender or door to cover up chip damage can ultimately cost you more at resale time if your prospective buyer sees a repainted area, and assumes, even incorrectly, that the car has had bodywork done to it. I understand that there are companies that are now workiing in applying this technique to metallic paint as well, but until it's out there, it is just talk.
Good Luck
