Mike, OnStar does not use satellites for direct telephone communications to/from vehicles at this time and instead uses an existing terrestrial analog cellphone network. The GPS system does use an array of satellites for position determination and it is the GPS receiver in the OnStar-equipped vehicle that is interfaced to the car's phone. When dialed into OnStar, the position data is reported by data stream to the control center. Hope this info helps. Cheers
