Plug gap is *very* important in the Trionic cars so, yes, changing plugs could have resulted in the smoother running.
Out of curiosity, did they replace your plugs w/ the stock NGKs? There have been some posts here in the past indicating that even dealers have had a hard time stocking them and have substituted Bosch.
I can't comment on the service price, as I've got many miles to go before 30k. It always seems high to me, given that they're mainly just changing out some fluids and filters. That said, if it's performed by a good tech with a practised eye examining the entire car and its systems, it's money well spent in heading off future problems. Regrettably, we seldon know whether that's actually the case.
