Hi Tom,
You are sure investigating the whole gambit of options: RWD/FWD/AWD - good for you!
Having owned Audi's, I have never had any reliability problems - even the turbo motors are fine and trouble-free in my experience... but that's a small and not a useful sample, I guess. I take very good care of the cars and I don't wail on them. I have an '02 Aero now and was cross-shopping similar choices last May (except that the M45 was not yet available - but it is under consideration for the next round). I was considering the A6 2.7t in the six-speed variant (although my friend has the tiptronic). I thought the A6 was fantastic (but I am biased by previous ownership) and was my first choice. If you are trying Audi's, make sure that you try the sport supension as the differences are stark. In addition, naturally aspirated A6's (2.8/3.0) are disappointingly slow. I ended up with the Aero because, 1) the car is fantastic as well, 2) I wanted to own a Saab before I die (I lusted after 900turbos in my youth), and 3) a 6K discount. That made the Audi 10K more than the Saab. The savings has allowed me to play a little with different wheels/tires/exhaust, etc. My father-in-law is an American V8 sort of guy (currently has a 427 Cobra) and loves the Saab. I trade with him on every possible occasion!!
The M45 is a real sleeper - its a gas to drive - sort of dreary to look at. Nothing like V8 punch if you need an automatic though. Headroom is tight in the car if you are tall. By the way, the new Cadillac CTS-Vi is just three months away (350hp V8, six speed manu-auto). Just like its six cylinder brethren - it will sit unloved on lots across America and be available at deep discount.
Happy hunting
eric
